North Carolina Still Moving Towards Sports Betting Licensure

The North Carolina Sports Betting  Committee provided an update on the state’s licensing process for its sports betting operators as it moves closer to the March 11 sports betting start date.

Sterl Carpenter, deputy executive director of gaming compliance and sports betting, said eight of the nine sports betting operators who have submitted applications are making progress to receiving their licenses prior to the scheduled start date and will likely receive their certificates of compliance by the March 1 start date to begin registering new users.

So far, nine operators have submitted applications to offer sports betting in North Carolina.

Operator Licenses Yet to Be Awarded

The committee is currently evaluating the license applications of nine operators who seek to offer sports betting in the state.

The applicants and their market access partners are as follows:

The Catawba Two Kings Casino will likely not be ready to launch during the March 11 start date.

Prior to the licenses being awarded, each of the operators will need to acquire their certificates of compliance. Carpenter noted that the operators will likely receive the certificates before the Friday, March 1 date when operators can begin accepting new player registrations.

The committee members also approved a voluntary sports betting exclusion program during the morning’s business, allowing North Carolina residents to bar themselves for a certain designated amount of time from sports betting or ban themselves altogether.

Supplier Licenses Awarded

The Committee noted that seven sports betting supplier licenses have already been awarded in North Carolina. Supplier license holders do not accept bets, but provide integrity services, content, and data in the state. The licenses are valid for 180 days.

Carpenter noted at the meeting that two additional supplier licenses are imminent, but not ready to be announced as of yet.
