Khan v Alexander: Just another step to Mayweather sweepstakes for speedy Amir

The Las Vegas lights are shining on King Khan who’s ready to show he’s got what it takes to inherit Money Mayweather’s riches.

A young Bolton lad named Amir Khan once said his dream was to one day headline in Las Vegas. Well here he is, just moments away from doing exactly that.

The 28-year-old most probably wouldn’t have predicted the circumstances in which that dream would come true, however. Most of the pre-fight talk has surrounded Khan’s next potential fight against the world’s pound-for-pound best, Floyd Mayweather, and many just see this fight as a catapult to sling the winner into no.1 contention for the Mayweather sweepstakes.

It’s obvious that in the future that’s the fight the Englishman wants, but he certainly can’t look past Devon ‘Alexander the Great’.

The Missouri born fighter is a former 3 time World Champion, has never been stopped, and his only losses have come against world class opposition in Timothy Bradley and Shawn Porter. He’s certainly a top class opponent.

However, Khan does look to be in a tremendous place. It’s evident that trainer Virgil Hunter is moulding the two time World Champion into a more complete fighter.

Khan’s last outing was against Luis Collazo, in his first Welterweight bout. The immense speed and timing we associate with Khan was still there, but in addition he was precise and calculated in defence, barely getting tagged against a fighter who was considered a very tough opponent. It was a clear sign that Khan has definitely now matured as a boxer.

The proud Boltonian’s main asset has always been his speed. Without doubt Khan is one of the very quickest punchers in the game. His blistering hand speed got him to a Silver Medal in the Olympics at the age of just 17 and he hasn’t looked back from there.

But it’s not just the speed of the punch, it’s the combinations that go with it. The former World Champion can throw 6 punch combinations without his opponent even being able to react. The biggest compliment that can be paid to Amir Khan is that Devon Alexander, a renowned fast puncher, has been training specifically on his speed to match that of Khan’s.

I’m certain he’s not going to be able to do that and I see Amir Khan enjoying a great amounts of success in the later rounds. Alexander tends to drop his hands and gets lazy with his defence as the fight goes on, a massive problem against a fighter who lunges in with the speed and accuracy of Khan.

Overall, the speed and combinations of Khan will be too much for Alexander. Expect the 28-year-old to win and look stylish in doing it.
